THE PROBLEM
The restoration of the Altana of the Altemps Palace has been addressed today, after a first intervention of consolidation took place in the 80s immediately after the acquisition of the Palace by the Superintendent. The need for action was dictated by both the state of degradation in which there have been found the stucco of the original facies, both from an aesthetic need which had as its purpose the restitution of the main architectural lines and at least partial integrity to surfaces that had come to us very sketchy with ruined effect. Due to this aim it was decided, in addition to a regular consolidation and a micro-plaster operation, to reconstruct all linear parts of the cornice and the intermediate frames renouncing on the other hand to the reproduction of parts in molded stucco of the decorative elements.
THE METHOD
To its original stucco has been returned the adhesion of support and cohesion of matter, after a careful micro-grouting of surfaces we have moved to the reconstruction of the frames in several layers of crinkle-cut followed by a lime-based powder and travertine finish with use of modini specially crafted and after preparation of the supporting pins in glass resin.
